Last month, I visited Vimalambika LPS, Kottarakkara, Kerala, to interact with the children and inaugurate the Vidyarangam Club. During the interaction, I talked to them about the importance of planting- not just planting trees, but also how the time we spend with nature can transform our mindset.

I was actually doubtful when the organisers invited me for the event. I was wondering, what could I possibly share with six-year-old children? I often talk about peacebuilding, climate action, interfaith dialogue, and many other complex topics. So, while preparing for the talk, I was thinking about how to make the conversation meaningful for them.

My mom reminded me, “Remember, you are going to a lower primary school and talking to 6–10-year-old children.” That made me stop and think. Maybe I didn’t need to give them a complicated lesson. I needed to give them something they could experience.

So, I decided to make the time more interactive. I asked the children about planting trees and how they feel when they plant and spend time with nature. At the end, I gave them a simple activity: plant a tree or a plant at home, observe its growth, keep a diary, and share their experiences. I also asked them to notice if they found new honeybees, butterflies, or other small creatures around the plant.
